A milling unit is an electromechanical component designed to robotize any cutting unit (electrospindle, laser cutting unit, water-jet unit) on two independent rotary axes in order to mill, drill, tap, laser cut or water-jet cut at any position and any angle in the working volume.
The milling unit can be incorporated in any type of two or three-axis milling-boring machine or machining center to upgrade to a four or five-axis system.
Umbra Cuscinetti milling units have been designed to meet specific torque requirements ranging from 80 N to 2500 N. The principal features of these units are high accuracy, reliability and versatility – the result of a rigorous design process and close cooperation with machine manufacturers from various fields.
The main components of these milling units are the rotary bearings, radial-axial high accuracy and stiffness bearings, permanent magnet synchronous-type axial servo-motors, which can be connected directly or via gearbox to the mainframe; a robust, precision braking system and an indirect or direct angular measuring system to ensure the highest possible degree of precision and repeatability.
All of these parts are either designed and built by Umbra Cuscinetti or supplied by leading manufacturers, thus ensuring excellent results in terms of quality, reliability and cost.
Umbra Cuscinetti milling units are designed to provide appropriate protection for the cutting process, and they incorporate sensors to ensure the same level of safety as on the host machine.
Set-point sensors, together with direct or indirect encoder markers, are used to ensure positioning repeatability with a tolerance of a few micrometers on some models.
Every effort is made to simplify the design to ensure robustness while at the same time optimizing functional aspects. Design projects are analyzed using the finite element method and tested directly for stiffness and precision.
Umbra Cuscinetti employs a three-dimensional coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to check assembled milling units in order to certify their accuracy.
